How does netcup handle abuse report?

  • Hi, our app is a short link service like bit.ly, very few of our customer may use our links to redirect to their fraudulently website or landing page, sometimes people complaints about such link.

we are currently on AWS, and once aws recieve such complaint/abuse report, they send us a email asking us to remove certain links before a deadline, we always removed the links and reply the email what we have done, then everything is fine, this could happen 2~6 times per month.

My question is does netcup handle the complaint/abuse report in such way? Give us the time to handle the issue, instead of shut down the server immediately. This is important for our business.

    Thank you

  • If you search the forum, you may find a similar thread some time (maybe years), where netcup was reacting very fast by shutting down the server/webhosting. Just in order to stop fürther damage by the link. It may be different by now, but I would not rely on it. As webdesignheld wrote ...

If it were me, I would ask you to not just remove the link, but get rid of such clients before I'd allow you to restart the service. Just removing the link does not prevent the client from doing it again. Every minute such a link is online means more damage.

They will send report and you have 24 hours. If it happens more often or you are too late they will lock your server.
For this type of service not suitable from my perspective.

  • Or check if there isn't somehow a way to detect patterns in abusive usage, e.g.

    • client ip is a tor exit node
    • client ip belongs (not) to a certain ASN
    • destination host belongs (not) to a certain ASN
    • destination host has some uncommon top level domain
    • client sends a certain Accept-Language header
    • scrape the destination page and check the language tags, or check for keywords
    • check the hostname against some abuse dbs
    • ...
  • we tried everything we can to prevent such clients(we don't want money from such clients), but still we can not 100% block them, we don't want to spend much our time on fighting the "fraud".

I guess netcup is not good for such service, so we decide put our databases like mysql, clickhouse...etc on netcup rs, while put the http redirection server on aws and linode.

Thank you for all the information
