SCP - neues UI: Start der Beta

  • That's its ugly and hard to read is one thing (personal, fine), but that functionality/management is now worse is just stupid.

Suggestions of the SCP (Server Control Panel) – neues UI subforum have been implemented extremly fast and fully and I guess Netcup will continue to do so.

Instead of "I don't like it, it is so baaaad" (all I hear with such posts is "mimimi"), which is not actionable information, start a thread (like a Github issue) and write down what you want to have changed and why.

And while doing that, appreciate the fact, that Netcup is developing its control panel in close contact with the community. I have NEVER EVER seen such a thing anywhere else.

    • The list of "Official Images" is harder to scan than the previous simple dropdown of ordered by version.
    • The left sidebar is missing. We can no longer easily update all of our servers one by one. Repeating tasks now require extra clicks, and the sidebar overview showing "Which server am I on?" is gone. A workaround could be to add a dropdown on the server page that lists all 50 servers in order, including the currently selected one, so we can still work through them sequentially. However, this is far less convenient than the sidebar. If you mostly host small users with 1-2 servers, then i undestand. If you host many pro users 10+ servers, left bar is way better.
    • The Firewall section is unclear. What does it manage? Does it affect the server firewall, the root VPS firewall, or the router? What exactly are we editing here?
    • The Root Access Password section has a "Show Password" button, but the password being shown is not the actual root password (nor should it be). The field should be empty by default. Right now, it displays a non-existent password. It should only show a value after clicking "Generate".
    • I dislike the Teletubby-style colours. They are harder to read and make the interface look unprofessional. (Yes, this is subjective. But i need to unboard clients, they expect more..) This is my main issue with the new interface, the look.
    • Why aren't all the basic statistics shown on a single page? Why make users click so much? Statistics like CPU, Disk IOPS, Network PPS, and Network Bytes are primarily used for quick scanning. The information from these tabs could easily be displayed on the main statistics page without requiring additional tabs or clicks. Unless maybe you expect to

i'm not willing to spend more time on it, "all I hear with such posts is "mimimi"; yes, i'm paying customer, i can do mimimi i'm not required to go to a forum and help them build someting they already had. They took away something i was paying for, so yes, mimimi.
    • The list of "Official Images" is harder to scan than the previous simple dropdown of ordered by version.

Ehm. There are icons of distributions and versions. The versions of every distribution is sorted from lower to higher. Quite the same imho.

Repeating tasks now require extra clicks, and the sidebar overview showing "Which server am I on?" is gone. There is the search bar on top (could be better visible), which doubles as a pulldown box with all servers (sorted from A-Z by nickname). So the feature you are requesting is already implemented: other than the former pure pull down box, this search bar lets users single out a server much faster with every key typed. So especially with 50 servers, it should be way faster to get to the right one with the search/pulldown box.

The "which server am I on" is consistently shown no matter in what main or submenu: nickname as well as server identifier are both shown in the blue-green part at all times.

So either the thing you requested is already in there or even better implemented than before or than you requested.

    • The Firewall section is unclear. What does it manage? Does it affect the server firewall, the root VPS firewall, or the router? What exactly are we editing here?

There are firewall policies which are set account wide in the topmost menu, which enables you to set templates which can individually be set per server in the next section: and then there is a firewall section at each server, obviously managing the firewall of the server that is selected. I think the per server firewall page is especially well done (I take a little bit of pride in giving the idea for some of those design changes which have happened in the testing phase) and one of the simplest to grasp visualizations compared to other hosters.

It obviously sets the firewall at the virtual LAN port (just as the old CCP did), so outside of the server itself, not the firewall of the OS (which never was visible / configurable in the CCP and cannot be without some adaptation of the OS). Apart from that, RTFM: https://www.netcup.com/en/helpcenter/…server/firewall

    • The Root Access Password section has a "Show Password" button, but the password being shown is not the actual root password (nor should it be). The field should be empty by default. Right now, it displays a non-existent password. It should only show a value after clicking "Generate".

This part isn't different from before. Apart from that, read the TEXT: "Set a new root password. Currently, this only works for Linux-based servers. The password shown here is a newly generated suggestion, not your current password. Feel free to change it."

If you press show and set, this is your new root password. If it should be empty or not is nitpicking.

    • I dislike the Teletubby-style colours. They are harder to read and make the interface look unprofessional. (Yes, this is subjective. But i need to unboard clients, they expect more..) This is my main issue with the new interface, the look.

Switch to dark mode, looks better, imho. But yeah, design is subjective. And the used colors are the Netcup Design System colors.

If you look closely, they didn't take away anything. Some things you seemingly didn't find / see because you didn't bother to look twice and others are even better (search in the server pulldown box).

I referred to "mimimi", because Netcup did a great beta phase where they implemented lots of changes suggested by the community extremely fast. I assume they will still optimize further. BUT: to make something better, they need a CLEAR description of the problem (and why it is a problem) and a CLEAR suggestion how it could be better. Just like a Github issue. And you didn't provide that and just lamented around. This post was a little better, but still too much lamenting and too little solution providing.

    - Yes, it looks happy with icons but harder to scan than just a sorted list like the old dropdown or a simple table

There is the search bar on top (could be better visible)
-> yes, it's invisable and still doesnt' show what server you are working on in the list, so sleeting the next is still harder then the left bar.

"obviously managing the firewall of the server", "obviously sets the firewall at the virtual LAN port"
-> yes, witch one.. on the server or the lan port, it doesn't state it.

"This part isn't different from before"
-> it was and is convuisuing to show a password on load that is (luckly) not the actual password

"This post was a little better, but still too much lamenting and too little solution providing"
Well, in general, I simply dislike the whole change, and that is my opinion. Prices go up, usability goes down. I am not required to help you out or spend my time fixing design errors for anyone but my own clients. Let's agree to disagree on whether this is an improvement in any way, because I don't think it is. It's fine; the majority of our servers are not hosted at Netcup i was just trying to signal this might nog have been the direction to take (atleast not for me, and i'm still a client). If you want to use github go ahead, not sure what it has to do with anyting.

    Cheers

In Frankreich würden solche Posts wahrscheinlich gleich komplett gelöscht...

The universe tends toward maximum irony. Don't push it.
