how do you try to ssh? ip4 ip6 domainname? use the username that was created.
Also root with password will not work in the default settings with ssh.

ip v4 only. and using username which i assume is root as i didnt specify any.

The sshd_config item PermitRootLogin with default "prohibit-password" usually causes this.
You can e.g. install the netcup Debian 13 Minimal image in a way, so that there is no other user besides root. At the end of the installation a root password is shown and you can login as root via SSH using this password then. OTOH, if you tell it to create another, additional user, you have to provide the public key for this user and you cannot login as root afterwards. I don't know if it's different with Ubuntu, though.
You have to do it vice versa: A pair of private and public keys is generated on your dev machine and the public key goes to your cloud server(s). The private key never leaves your dev machine.

Standard user on ubuntu with most template installs is called "ubuntu" and that's probably who the password is for. Did you read the mail?
finally all is sorted.. i was indeed using public key for auth rather than private.. but hey its my first time using the opposite scenario.. i can now configure the server with peace.. spent 3 days trying to get into my own server.. thanks netcup
