KVM vServer Backup Slot & Retention Confusion

  • Hello Netcup Community,

I’m still unclear on how backups function, despite reviewing the control panel description and contacting support. Here are my questions:

    1. Backup Slot Usage:
      • The control panel says I have 1 backup slot available. What does this mean? For example:
        • If I create a backup today, will it occupy the slot until I delete it manually?
        • Or is the slot automatically freed up after the backup is deleted (e.g., after 48 hours)?
    2. 48-Hour Retention:
      • The description states backups are stored on S3 for 48 hours. Does this mean:
        • Backups are automatically deleted after 48 hours, requiring me to generate a new backup every two days?
        • Or can I manually delete/overwrite backups before the 48-hour period ends?
        • Or it is being done automatically by the backup system?
    3. Restoration Process:
      • To restore a backup, the documentation mentions uploading it via S3 and importing it as an image. Is this entirely self-service through the control panel, or does it require Netcup staff intervention?

Important: The support team previously directed me to Webhosting backup articles, which do not apply to KVM vServers. Any official documentation or step-by-step guides for vServer backups would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!

  • I was actually confused by that wording as well on CCP

So Netcup DOES NOT have automatic backups? (like Vultr, DigitalOcean - they charge 20% of the instance price for weekly backups) . By the way, I don't mind paying that for a hassle-free backup, FYI, if that would be an option.

So if snapshot/backups are a manual thing for 24 hours https://helpcenter.netcup.com/en/wiki/server/scp-media#snapshots - then it's really only useful for pre-i'm-gonna-ruin-my-system type of last minute save, but not for consistent weekly backups. Correct? Am I missing something?

It seems that the best way is to back up my system is to set up a script to export data, DB, config files and duplicate to an S3 or storage box somewhere.

    Thank you

    No, they don't

Correct. (Or if you want to transfer the whole machine to a new server)

    I would recommend this
