No connection to server possible after installing from backup image

  • My server was running up against the storage limit and I have another one on a higher tier with more storage.

I created a snapshot and installed it on the larger server via the media->custom images section.

After I started the new server I was suddenly unable to connect to it.

The vnc console works, but no other option of connecting to it works.

Sshing into it does not work anymore. (Yes ive changed the ip adress in my local config)

Pinging localhost works, pinging anything else fails (unresolved name).

I have also checked both ufw and fail2ban and those also dont report anything wrong.

I am not sure where exactly this problem originates or how I could possibly proceed to fix/diagnose it and would like some ideas.

(As of now ive not written support, since it might aswell be a user error from something ive missed)

  • Did you change the network configuration on the target server or are you just trying to connect to the new IP address but the server configuration still has the old address that won't work on the new server?

When you're logged in on the VNC console, does ip a show the IP address of the old or the new server?

  • That depends on your choice of operating system and network management. A good bet on Debian based systems would be to edit /etc/network/interfaces, with nano if you need a less daunting editor than vi. If you're using an Ubuntu based system, you're probably using NetworkManager and can edit connections using the nmcli tool.
