What is going on with netcup?

  • So, based on the testimonies of (seemingly) very happy netcup customers on Reddit (r/vps), I ordered a Root server a week ago.

Payment in advance (per verification requirements) went smoothly and showed up almost immediately in the control panel. Since then, nothing. No product showed up, no update regarding the provisioning or ETA, nothing.

I filed a ticket after roughly 24 hours, received an automated response along the lines of "we're very busy, please be patient". OK, but for a week?

Hence my question: what is going on with netcup? Should I just cancel my contract and report back to Reddit that the glowing reviews might be, let's just say a tad on the unrealistic side?

  • I don't know what the bottleneck is in this case. The only thing I can imagine, that somehow there's a manual step needed in provisioning servers to new customers after (successful) verification, which might cause problems at the moment. Support seems to be drowning in a sea of tickets. Once you get your first server, the second one might take just 3-5 minutes. I ordered 2 serversat Black Friday, 4 minutes later both of them were accessible. What probably means, this is a fully automated workflow for existing customers, because I guess they were also very busy during Black Friday.

Almost tragic, failing because of too much demand. Until this year, I never felt like they ever had REAL trouble keeping up with the demand on Black Friday or during advent or other sales actions before. Although I imagine they were also quite busy during those earlier sales action days. But this years workload must have been on another level compared to the last years. Yesterday I got an email concernng a ticket of mine from 12-21. The problem itself was already solved the next day, but I had no reaction besides the automated first confirmation maiI until yesterday, hope they closed the ticket now. I also hope everything will be back to normal again anytime soon.

  • This doesn't help you, but my signup process basically worked:
    * Jan 6 evening (US Time). Ordered a Root Server on Jan 6th evening (US time), I made a mistake on the customer info, so it was rejected overnight.
    * Jan 7 morning (US Time) Re-ordered a Root Server (about 4PM in German) and withing 10 minutes I got an email saying I had to go through verification. I chose Stripe, did it right away.
    * Jan 7 morning (US Time) I got credentials for CCP about a minute after doing verification (or maybe while I was doing it?), but CCP had no orders shown for me. I decided to let it wait a day.
    * Jan 7/8 overnight (US Time) Got emails with credentials to SCP and information about the server. When I got up, it was available.

So the summary is: About 24hrs after I submitted a correct order and did Stripe verification, I had my Root Server in Manassas.
It's possible diff data centers have different backlogs or my ID verification was faster/easier somehow. I wrote this just to say that at least in one case, they delivered about what I expected.

  • Thank you both for your answers!

krby: located in Canada myself, so I expect the verification process should be the same (I used PayPal). My root server, if/when I get it, will be located in Amsterdam, but that's about the only difference with your situation.
