T&C on blockchain RPC nodes

  • Hi,

My question is specifically to the netcup technical team.

What is your policy on running EVM client nodes which are NON PoW (Proof of Work) which do NO hardware mining on root servers? The software in question is specifically with this software https://github.com/ethereum/go-ethereum and similar ones. Blockchains like Celo, Polygon, Ethereum 2.0 use this. It is basically a rocks db + libp2p software so needs a lot of network connections (100-400 connections established). Bandwith usage is generally low.

Do you do case by case reviews? My use case falls in the non-profit sector and is mostly for indexing.

Also is there a blanket ban on all blockchain related tech on netcup? i.e. Any blockchain related project is going to be banned.

    Thanks.

  • 1. In this subforum, only users read and answer.

    2. T&Cs: https://www.netcup.eu/bestellen/agb.php

    Zitat

    5. Obligations on the part of the customer

The following activities are expressly prohibited:

    ...

Operation of mining-services such as "Bitcoin", "Ethereum", "OneCoin" or "Monero".

    ...

Which is a blanket ban. So good bye, we don't need useless crypto here.

  • TBT I even bolded out the NO mining part. I am not sure if you have read the description, it is literally a rocksdb with a graphQL, websocket and RPC API.

And crypto is just one part of the blockchain. There are other non speculative crypto use cases an a lot of governments in EU officially support development and research on blockchain specifically Ethereum. Also Ethereum has switched off the PoW consensus (mining) 3 months ago.

You can no longer ignore it or shun it as crypto scam, which I acknowledge, do exist and are bad.

Also attached is my 1 week resource usage of running said software on DO which has arguably worse servers than netcup.

  • Don't talk to me, I am just a customer, talk to Netcup. I just cited the T&Cs, which talk about Ethereum in particular.

I have yet to see a truly useful application which can not be achieved by non-crypto means. Until then my opinion is negative. Too many scams have happened, just have a look at the whole FTX debacle (which has by far not been the only one). Crypto currencies are more or less only means for speculation, that could be done less energy intensive by just going to Las Vegas and at least have a good time there. The "currency to pay for things" aspect, which could have been really something new, is really in the background and crypto currencies fluctuate way too much to be useful as currency which should be more or less stable.

  • It's all in the T&C;

    Zitat

    - Operation of mining-services such as "Bitcoin", "Ethereum", "OneCoin" or "Monero".

    - Running server services that cause a particularly high CPU load; this does not apply in the case of dedicated and root servers

Since your not running a mining-service and the CPU load is low, you should be good to go.
