Information about services and options

  • Hello,

I'm in search of a new provider to change my actual Virtual Private Server.
Actually I have a small VPS with:
    -) 1 vCore
    -) 2 Gb of RAM
-) 40 Gb of SSD space.
    -) Daily automatic Backup included.

This VPS host a website + PHP + mariadb.

I need to change the architecture of the website, using more modern tecnology (docker, nodejs, Postgre, ecc).

    I'm looking after two product:
    -) VPS 500 G12
    -) VPS 1000 ARM G11

My questions are about the automatic backup feature. Is it possible to add this feature? How much does it cost?

    Thanks.

  • Hello iu1jvo,

since I also just run a small VPS 500 G8 for things like that, I can confirm that all netcup VPS products have this feature to make a snapshot of the current server and the first download of this is free. Additional Snapshot (downloads) or backups can be bought from the CCP basically the control center and cost 1,50 € per snapshot.

Since I have never used the snapshot / Backups feature, the process seems pretty manual to me and this not in the slightest compare to what you describe as a "daily automated backup" which would also be very costly in case of automation every snapshot creation and download is billed with 1,50 € so there might be better ways. Also the Snapshots are stored on the storage of the server itself, so in case of a server storage failure all your snapshots are lost - it might be better to rely on external storage or a second server ;)

The netcup API could be used to automate such tasks as to create a server snapshots and the tutorial I found in German is this one:
Netcup: Automatische Server Snapshots mit Bash einrichten

Maybe someone with more experience can chime in here if I am missing a point ... :/

Hi there. Depending on your Linux skills you should consider working with cronjobs that create full backups every night -- which you download manually or automatically. As pointed out by the previous poster, snapshots are stored locally and the actual question is, whether you really want to restore the whole server instead of a single file, database or a full directory containing your customer data. Furthermore, you shouldn't rely on snapshots only as they may also fail to restore under certain circumstances. I hope this helps. :)
