No internet connection on my Root Server

  • Hello, I have exactly same issue "Unidentified Network" in my Windows Server 2025.

Already installed drivers but I don't have connection. I did ping to gateway address provided by netcup but it is unreachable, does it means that netcup didn't give me internet connection? Or is it my failure configuration?

Did you solved the issue? Can you give me some hints to solve it? Thank you in advance!

  • sry for grave-diggin

i do understand why a newbie wants a windows server - because they are used to windows at home-pc -> but believe me: its a really really really bad idea!

windows servers are something that ONLY professionals "should/have to" use -> they are so vulnerable and provide no benefit for private use...

like 75% of EXE software can be found for linux - for the remaining windows-only software we have wine - for the last 1% you simply either dont have it or use a VM with hardened Win7/10 (yet netcup doesnt allow nested vms - afaik)

like for 99,5% of private users its best to go with a linux server
    - choose debain or ubuntu = you have tons of documentation and can find lots of help from the community
    - requires only little hardening to be secure*ish

    - can easily do almost everything you need from a server

for all beginners thinking about windows servers -> a server is a server and not a desktop-home-pc = and if you really really want to click stuff on a gui you can install that on your linux server too -> lxde looks like windows and is quiet easy for your server to run and you can connect via vnc or rdp

pro-tip for all beginners: UPDATE YOUR SERVER REGULARY (like at least once a week, or write a script that does that for you, or install a server-administration-software where you can automate stuff and also update manual -> there are quiet some good options out there)

  • In case someone else needs this information

As I understand, DHCP is not available on netcup, and you need to manually specify the IP address, subnet, and gateway for the internet connection.

I managed to set up the internet manually by changing the adapter settings in Windows 2025.

You’ll need the server information from SCP, under the Network tab.

In Windows go to network adapter settings:

Settings -> Network & internet -> Advanced network settings -> Ethernet -> More adapter options -> Edit

For IPv4 I specified the IP and gateway from the SCP settings, and I also set the subnet mask to 255.255.252.0 (since my IP had postfix /22).

I also specified DNS 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 – you may prefer different ones in your case.

If needed, you can enter IPv6 data based on the SCP information, but this is probably optional (I just unchecked it).

After all this i just rebooted the server.

  • There is another important thing. If anyone ends up in here.

Yes you need to enter your IP Address manually. But if you configure the web firewall (which i hope you all do) in the SCP, then you need to allow UDP for Port 53 (DNS resolver to "give you internet" xD). Otherwise the Firewall will block UDP as its not a stateful firewall for UDP.

    For example:

    #DescriptionDirectionProtocolactionSourcesSrc PortsGoalsDst Ports
    1RDPINCOMINGTCPACCEPTYOUR IP ADDRESSanyany3389
    2DNS UDP ResponseINCOMINGUDPACCEPTDNS SERVER
    (eg. Cloudflare: 1.1.1.1, 1.0.0.1)
    53anyany

As you can see there are two rules.
The first is the most important. Because you limit your remotedesktop connection access from the world. You can enter your ip address via the webpanel if that changes everyday. I know, annoying, but hackers are more annoying ;). That way only your address can connect via RDP.

The second rule is the one i was talking about. You need to create it to allow the server resolving names like google.de.

ONLY NEEDED: If you configure anything in the SCP firewall. If not, then the firewall is open for any.

    --------------------------------------------------------

In which case that was helpful in any way?
I am not saying you are wrong. But you are posting into a topic without giving any information to answer it...
That way, nobody here will come the goal, becoming a "professional" (as you said), any more near...

    Greetings,

Though that is only true if you do not use netcup's DNS servers. On the other hand you are missing a rule for NTP.

All of this stuff has been widely discussed already in this forum, a good entry point can be found here:

I was talking about the internet connection. Not time sync :).
I know those two rules are noth everything and maybe there are other threads about that. But google found that one and it was incomplete. Just wanted to provide help for other people reaching this post via google search.
