chara - Before Purchase Questions

  • I would want to buy lite server plan - 60gb + 2vcpu + 2gb ram sound awesome for $3 per month
since i can only buy for 6 month, i have a questions before-ahead:
    1. can i use vpn freely from given domain? any restrictions?
    2. as i understand `Premium functions (product-specific) -> DVD drive for custom ISO files: yes` means it is already included in chosen plan, right? i use arch btw
    3. will it make any problems that i am citizen of russia? will netcup require me any verification? (payment itself must not be a problem tho)

    if that is:
    1. no/except_piracy
    2. yes
    3. no
    - i gonna buy it, 2 times better deal by price alone compare to what i pay for now; and not including terrible stability of other provider vps

  • 1. can i use vpn freely from given domain? any restrictions?

You have to abide by the terms and conditions, which exclude not just piracy but also any other illegal activity and, among others, pornography, crypto mining and radical political agitation.

    2. as i understand `Premium functions (product-specific) -> DVD drive for custom ISO files: yes` means it is already included in chosen plan, right?

Yes, you can make ISO files, provided or your own, available to the virtual machine as a virtual DVD drive at no extra cost.

    3. will it make any problems that i am citizen of russia? will netcup require me any verification?

All accounts require verification. The extent to which Netcup verifies new users depends on internal criteria.

Users of Netcup servers have complained about spotty reachability from Russia and describe symptoms which align with deep packet inspection firewalls in Russia.

Personally I would prefer that Netcup not do business with customers from warring Russia, but it's their choice if they do. Not only is it a matter of principle to not provide service to a country which invades its neighbors and kills and maims innumerable people and wages cyber warfare on this and other countries. It is also deeply unwise to provide a network foothold and access to an environment that other customers have to trust to some extent to people from your country.

  • Hi,

    1. The server is under German or Austrian jurisdiction (depending on where your server lands) and you must obey local laws. VPN itself is not limited (I use it myself) but they will forward abuse requests to you which you must answer within 24 hours if something was done using your server IP.

    2. You can load your own ISO to boot from. They also have a Arch Minimal image you can install directly from the server control panel

    3. No idea about that, only a Netcup employee can answer this.

  • 1. Yes, as long as you use it legally. Definitely avoid piracy or anything actively monitored by German copyright law firms. especially torrenting copyrighted material (automated bots monitor torrent swarms constantly, so it’s really not worth the risk...)

    2. you can upload your own custom ISO files or select one of the pre-configured operating system images provided by netcup.

    3. Netcup will probably verify you, If you are connecting from Russia keep in mind that the government probably relies heavily on Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) at the ISP level. Protocols like OpenVPN or WireGuard are easily detectable so you should definitely choose another (obfuscated) protocol for this. (VLESS with Reality, Shadowsocks or other stuff...)

short : don't torrent, don't do illegal stuff.
