I need a windows/intel machine I can RDP to. Would I be able to virtualise this with something like kvm on Linux on a root server? I think this might constitute as nested virtualisation and I don't know if this is a feature.
Thanks.

Hardware support for nested virtualization is not available, not even on root servers and not as a paid upgrade either. You could virtualize entirely in software, but of course that would be unbearably slow. If you need a Windows system, you will have to dedicate a root server or vps to the task so that you can run Windows directly on that.
You can install Windows on Netcup servers directly, no nested virtualisation required. You should however activate the Netcup firewall and only use RDP via a VPN (e.g. https://tailscale.com/ ) out of security reasons.
Nested virtualisation is not available with Netcup.
This server is directly connected to the public internet and will be attacked from day one. So make sure to properly close it down.
Or forget the VPN stuff and restrict access to RDP limited to your ip address using the Netcup firewall.

Most people don't have a fixed IP (not at home and especially not when mobile), so that is not often an option.
VPN plus Firewall is the way to go, not something to forget. ![]()
