May I ask: Did you use one of the images Netcup provided or did you install Ubuntu yourself?
This is actually not a recent change as documented here: "How to stop NetworkManager to put Ubuntu server to sleep?" [askubuntu.com]
I originally used an image and later upgraded it myself. Then I installed gnome almost a year ago so yeah it's odd that it didn't want to sleep until yesterday.
I found in syslog that for some reason Ubuntu NetworkManager wanted to put my server to sleep. I have no idea why this started happening now. Retrospectively I know I made a wrong choice in the first place choosing a desktop distro to run a server.
Well, you should look at your logs too…

I have been using netcup for several years already but I've never had any problems. I'll look at syslog.
Hi, today I've been having lots of problems with my root server. It just dies. I have been watching my processes closely when this happens. I have had top open on shell watching my processes, nothing special happens, terminal just freezes and and I can't connect via ssh anymore. I have to power cycle to get it running again. Any help?
