Root server questions

  • Hi,

I'm considering ordering a root server, specifically a 4000 G11, but have several questions :

    • Does the 2.5 Gbps virtual network card actually amounts to 2.5 Gbps of Internet bandwith ?
      • If yes, is it dedicated ?
    • As I'm in France, would there be a difference in latency at Vienna compared to Nuremberg ?
      • If yes, could I request Nuremberg for free for this reason ?
        • If not, could I measure the latency for myself against existing servers before considering paying almost 5 additional EUR ?
    • How much is the fee for cancelling early a contract with a 12 months period ?
    • The storage space line mentions a RAID system, but which one ? Is it RAID 1 ?
    • Is Local Block Storage separate from the default storage space ?
      • If yes, can it be used with LVM to combine these, and can the logical volume have RAID 1 ?

    Thanks

  • Hi KaKi87,

please keep in mind that this is a customer's forum only; if you want definite answers, you have to contact the official support of NetCup. Besides that, I try my best to answer your questions.

If I remember correctly, the specification of the root servers is "up to 2.5 Gbps" with a guaranteed bandwidth of 1 Gpbs. (Please correct me if I'm wrong here!) This directly translates to "internet bandwidth".

I don't exactly know, but perhaps it would be the best for you to just rent two smaller virtual servers in both locations and check the latency specific to your use case on your own. Another approach would be to search for the two ASNs, get an IP address in both locations and check the latency via ping.

I'm pretty sure that NetCup will not give you a discount for one of the server's locations because of your latency concern.

You cannot cancel a 12 months period early and you have to pay a part of the whole period (e.g., 3 months or 6 months) in advance. As a possible "way out", there is a thread in this forum to exchange servers with other customers. I wouldn't count on it but with this, it could be possible to get rid of your server before the contract ends.

As far as I know, NetCup uses a RAID 10 configuration (at least they did a few years back). Keep in mind that the virtual disk your guest operating system sees is just one device so you cannot change/use RAID on your own.

I do not know how to answer these two questions. Maybe someone else have some insights on it :).

  • could I request Nuremberg for free for this reason ?

You can select your location preference while ordering. Not restricting the location is free, but choosing either Nuremberg or Vienna costs extra.

    See the Root Server page:

    Our satisfaction guarantee

Before you enter into a contract with us, we would like that you are satisfied with our root server products.

If you should be unsatisfied with your root server within 30 days of placing your order, you can cancel your order and will receive the basic fee paid (price per month x billing period) reimbursed in full.

The storage space line mentions a RAID system, but which one ? Is it RAID 1 ?

The RAID system is not exposed to the virtual server. You have to do your own backups and / or failover if that is important to you.

Is Local Block Storage separate from the default storage space ?

Local Block Storage is exposed to the virtual server as a separate virtual hard disk. You can do anything you want with it, software-RAID, LVM or just put a partition table and a filesystem on it. But LBS is provided locally and thus tied to the server. It is not suitable for creating storage redundancy. See the FAQ.

  • There are two speed test servers you can also ping:

You can also use the Anexia Looking Glass which should be in the same location of the root server:

    Nuremberg: https://lg.anexia-it.com/lg/#node/nuremberg
    Vienna: https://lg.anexia-it.com/lg/#node/vienna-datasix

As I'm in France, would there be a difference in latency at Vienna compared to Nuremberg ?

If yes, could I request Nuremberg for free for this reason ?

If not, could I measure the latency for myself against existing servers before considering paying almost 5 additional EUR ?

From my personal tests, Vienna has a 10ms higher ping in general, this is because the connection still gets routed trough Nuremberg most of the time.
