Download files from offline vServer constrained by limited local storage

  • Hi all,

    I'm trying to download a few files (< 5GB) from my offline vServer.

    I created an offline snapshot at `media` => `snapshots`. It's a compressed file of a little more than 100GB.
    The issue I'm having is that I don't have access to 200+GB of local storage to extract it, mount the contained raw image and copy the files I need.

    Further information:

    - Buying a new hard drive would be my resort if there's no cheap way.

    - Rent some online storage, save the compressed file there and extract to my machine (ca. 150GB available) would be a little cheaper

    - The server is offline because it was an old Debian vulnerable to regreSSHion, hence I took it offline. I didn't find a way to start the server without public internet access with a quick search.

    - I think the guy in this thread tries to do something similar, but with an online server.

    Does someone know a cheap and quick way to get the files out without connecting the server to the public internet and under the local storage <200GB restriction?

    Cheers,
    Cori

  • corrcthrsbttrystple : While aRaphael already pointed out the most convenient and cheapest way, you also should always have the option to rent another VPS on an hourly basis and simply use that as long as you need. This might come in handy in cases where you need to perform back-to-back tests or the like and should always be much cheaper than buying new hardware.

    While you'd need to setup/administrate your own firewall in said case, this should not be too much effort (and you can always test this thorougly using the "secondary" VPS first). A couple of posts addressing this should already be available on this forum (if not also part of some tutorials).
